At Eye to Eye, one of the most common eye conditions that our Cockeysville eye doctor
sees in our pediatric patients is strabismus. Strabismus can also be referred to as crossed eyes, deviation, heterotropia, squint, and tropia. It is a condition characterized by the two eyes not looking towards the same object together, at the same time. For people with strabismus, the muscles that line the eyes do not work together properly. The result of this muscle failure is that while one eye focuses on one object, the other eye looks in another direction. While this is happening, two images are being sent to the brain, which can be confusing, and which can lead the brain to only accept the image from one eye after a while, ignoring the images coming from the weaker eye.

While strabismus is most common in younger patients, it can also occur to adults later in life. The main symptoms of strabismus are in the appearance of the eye. If it looks as though your child’s eyes are looking in two different directions, you should bring her in for a visit with our Cockeysville eye doctor
so that we can evaluate her symptoms. We can usually diagnose strabismus after a detailed physical examination of the eyes. We will also perform several eye tests to measure the extent of the eyes’ misalignment. If a diagnosis of strabismus is confirmed, our Cockeysville eye doctor
will then make recommendations for treatment. Strabismus can often be treated with the use of eyeglasses, eye patches, eye coordination exercises, or eye surgery. We can give you more personalized recommendations after a visit at our office.
